When labor begins and contractions start, or when you head to the hospital, your presence makes a huge difference. This is one of the most challenging moments in your partner’s life, and your support is essential.
What can you do during contractions?
- Stay calm, as your energy affects her. A calm presence helps her feel safe.
- Assist her in breathing and tell her to take slow, deep breaths. To distract her from the pain, take a deep breath and release it slowly.
- Encouraging her consistently with simple phrases like “I’m with you”, “You’re strong”, can lift her spirits.
- Apply a light touch to her hand, rub her back or place your hand on her shoulder to reassure her.
- Plans can change at any time, so be flexible (for example, deciding to have a caesarean instead of a natural birth). Stay positive and supportive.
- Bring an extra pillow, offer water or ice chips, reposition her if needed, and ensure she feels cared for.
- Remain focused by avoiding distractions, such as your phone. Pay close attention to her.
After Delivery, be the first to reassure her and tell her that she’s a hero. Share the moment and hold the baby if you’re allowed or capture a photo of the first precious minutes together.
