3rd Trimester – week 30

Dear Dad, your responsibilities begin the moment your baby is born.

As a father, your true role starts right after the baby is born. You’re not just a bystander, you’re a key support for both your partner and your newborn in the first 24 hours.

Here’s what you should focus on immediately after birth:

  • Preparing baby’s official documents.
  • Ensuring that your baby’s full name is spelled correctly on the birth certificate.
  • Bringing your ID, insurance information, and any paperwork needed.
  • Keeping copies of important documents like the birth certificate, vaccination booklet and hospital discharge papers.

Supporting the Mother, via:

  • Help her get up or walk if the doctor allows it.
  • Bring her water, food, or anything she needs.
  • Speak to nurses or doctors for her if she’s too tired to talk.
  • Take care of the baby while she rests or showers.

You can also:

  • Learn how to change diapers and help with feeding.
  • Hold your baby skin-to-skin if needed.
  • Ask questions; the medical staff is there to help you.

Manage family visits by:

  • Set clear visiting hours to avoid overwhelming your partner.
  • Limit how many visitors come at once.
  • Always check with her before allowing anyone in.

Be polite but firm with family, her comfort and the baby’s well-being come first.

You are the protector, voice, organizer and the first teammate your baby and partner need. Stay calm, be involved, and don’t let distractions (like your phone) pull you away. This is a moment you’ll never forget and your support will mean everything.
