2nd Trimester – week 18

Do you love surprises, or are you already excited to find out your baby’s gender?

While it’s sometimes possible to detect the baby’s sex via ultrasound from the fourth month of pregnancy, this week offers an excellent opportunity to find out clearly, it’s a special moment every mom looks forward to.

As the uterus continues to grow, it starts to push against the internal organs. The intestines are moved upwards and sideways, and you might even feel your uterus when standing up.

The growing pressure can also cause fluid buildup in your legs, making it harder for your body to get rid of it, especially due to gravity; which may result in swollen feet.

You may also start noticing a dark vertical line appearing down the middle of your belly – the Linea nigra – caused by hormonal changes. Don’t worry, it usually fades within a few months after birth.

Week 18 Tips

  • Do not get up quickly from a lying to a sitting position, and move slowly to prevent dizziness. When lying down, the uterus can put pressure on the inferior vena cava and the aorta, which may lower your blood pressure and cause lightheadedness or dizziness during sudden movements.
  • To help relieve swelling in your feet, try compression socks or elevate your feet above heart level using a pillow.
  • Staying hydrated is essential, it helps keep your skin moisturized, prevents leg cramps and dizziness, eases constipation, and helps regulate your body temperature.
