1st Trimester – Week 10

Looking for a sweet nickname for your baby? Why not call your little one “Apricot” for now?

It’s the perfect match; your baby is currently the size of an apricot. What a fast and wonderful transformation!

As you enter the middle of your third month and approach the second trimester, you’re just weeks away from saying goodbye to annoying nausea. Your appetite may also start returning to normal soon.

This week, you may notice more abdominal stretching, which can cause some discomfort known as round ligament pain. You might also find it harder to button your jeans, so you may need to switch to stretchy maternity pants. By now, it’s normal to have gained around 3 kilograms since the beginning of your pregnancy.

Some veins may also appear more prominent as your blood flow increases to support your baby’s development. You may still experience other symptoms like fatigue, mood swings, bloating, and heartburn.

Your doctor may suggest doing a Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) this week. This blood test is performed on a sample of the mother’s blood to screen for chromosomal abnormalities like Edwards syndrome, Down syndrome, and Patau syndrome.

An internal ultrasound (transvaginal) might also be done between weeks 10 and 14 to check nuchal translucency, which helps detect potential signs of abnormalities.

Week 10 Tips

  • Keep plain salty crackers by your bedside and eat one before getting out of bed to reduce morning nausea.
  • Eat foods rich in vitamins D, A, and C, and be sure you’re taking folic acid daily.
  • Eat mangoes, they’re full of vitamins C and A, and also a good source of potassium.
  • Try lemon juice or sugar-free gum to help reduce excessive saliva.
