Fertilization occurs when one sperm successfully penetrates the egg. Though thousands race toward the egg, only the strongest one wins.
Once inside, the egg seals itself to prevent entry by any other sperm. Pregnancy typically begins at the end of week 2 or mid-week 3 of the cycle.
At this stage, the embryo is very tiny, measuring about 120 μm.
