Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten (found in wheat, barley, rye) that damages the intestinal lining and affects absorption of nutrients.
Symptoms vary with age and may include:
- In infants and toddlers: chronic diarrhea, bloating, poor weight gain, vomiting, irritability.
- In older children: chronic diarrhea or constipation, anemia, weight loss, short stature, dental enamel defects, delayed puberty, and bone pain.
Screening for celiac disease is recommended for children with persistent symptoms, especially if there is a family history of the condition.
