What is an epidural and how does it work?

Epidural is an injection in the area surrounding the spinal cord nerves (epidural space) and is used to relieve pain during labor in some medical cases. It is divided into two types:

  • Continuous epidural: works by blocking and stopping pain signals from spinal cord nerves to the brain, which relieves pain and continues for a specific time according to the drug amount administered by the doctor.
  • Combined spinal-epidural: blocks pain by injecting a small amount of anesthetic into the cerebrospinal fluid, which helps relieve severe pain and therefore eases labor.
