What are breathing techniques during labor?

Breathing techniques vary depending on the stage of labor and help the mother control pain, calm. Techniques include:

  • Regular breathing: deep breathing during contractions, inhaling through the nose and exhaling from the mouth after each contraction.
  • Breathing with each contraction: inhaling at the start of the contraction and exhaling if there is difficulty speaking during contractions, focusing on a point in the room to control pain, and exhaling slowly as if blowing a feather.
  • Rapid light breathing: taking short rapid breaths followed by a long exhalation when contractions become more frequent and painful.
  • Variable breathing: using a technique alternating slow and fast breaths at the peak of contractions when transitioning to the pushing stage. It includes taking a cleansing breath, followed by blowing gently for the length of each contraction.
  • Pushing breathing: taking a deep breath and holding it to push during the second stage of labor, then your body will lean forward and you will give birth smoothly.
