Is spinal (epidural) anesthesia safe?

Yes, spinal/epidural anesthesia is safe for both mother and baby. It’s commonly used in C-sections and also for pain relief in vaginal birth (painless delivery).

It may not be recommended if you:

  • Take blood thinners.
  • Have bleeding/clotting disorders.
  • Have spinal injuries or brain problems.

Possible side effects (usually temporary): headache, itching, low blood pressure (causing nausea or dizziness), or temporary loss of bladder control.
