How do I help my child overcome separation anxiety?

Separation anxiety is normal in children, especially between 8 months and 3 years. You can help your child adjust by:

  • Keeping goodbyes short and simple and leaving with a confident attitude.
  • Practicing short separations at home, leaving the child in a safe space with a familiar caregiver.
  • Maintaining a consistent routine, including regular sleep and meal times, to provide security.
  • Talking to your child in advance, explaining where you are going and when you will return.
  • Leaving the child with a familiar item (like a blanket or toy) to comfort them.
  • Avoid sneaking away, as it increases anxiety. Say goodbye clearly and reassure the child you will return.
  • Gradually increase the separation time until the child adapts.
