Separation anxiety is normal in children, especially between 8 months and 3 years. You can help your child adjust by:
- Keeping goodbyes short and simple and leaving with a confident attitude.
- Practicing short separations at home, leaving the child in a safe space with a familiar caregiver.
- Maintaining a consistent routine, including regular sleep and meal times, to provide security.
- Talking to your child in advance, explaining where you are going and when you will return.
- Leaving the child with a familiar item (like a blanket or toy) to comfort them.
- Avoid sneaking away, as it increases anxiety. Say goodbye clearly and reassure the child you will return.
- Gradually increase the separation time until the child adapts.
