What is the safe way to trim the newborn’s nails?

Most babies are born with long and sharp nails that need trimming after birth immediately, and the best time is after bathing or when the infant is asleep.

Use baby nail clippers or a soft nail file and carefully trim the nails straight across. Hold the baby’s hand firmly and gently press the skin under the nail to avoid cutting it.

Do not bite the baby’s nails as it may cause wounds or infection. Trim nails when the baby is calm and steady. Avoid cutting nails too short so as not to injure the skin. Dispose of the cut nails immediately to avoid the risk of choking.
