Burping helps release swallowed air that causes gas and colic symptoms. It is recommended to burp the baby after each feed, or at least when switching breasts during breastfeeding. It usually takes 1–2 minutes.
Here are some ways to help with burping:
- Burping on the shoulder: Place the baby on your shoulder and gently pat their back.
- Burping while sitting on your lap: Sit the baby upright on your lap, lean them slightly forward, support their chin with one hand and pat their back gently with the other hand.
- Burping lying on the lap: Place the baby face down across your lap, support their head slightly higher than the chest, and gently pat their back.
