3rd Trimester – week 28

By week 28, your baby is approximately 37.6 cm long and weighs around 1.1–1.13 kg, roughly the size of an eggplant. While still small, your baby’s growth accelerates significantly now.

Baby development includes:

  • Fat accumulation that smooths out their skin
  • Practicing breathing motions for lung development
  • REM sleep cycles, your baby may already be dreaming!
  • Blinking, tongue movements, strong sucking reflex, hiccups, and cough reflexes
  • Brain folding to increase surface area and overall growth
  • Robust growth of eyebrows, eyelashes, and scalp hair
  • A gradual decrease in heart rate toward 130 bpm at birth
  • Maturation of the autonomic nervous system to regulate temperature and breathing
  • Most babies move into a head-down position as birth approaches
  • Early immune system development, possibly influenced by beneficial microbes.
