Baby Development
On 3D ultrasound, facial features are becoming more distinct.
- Skin: as fat accumulates, the skin becomes smoother and less translucent, and footprints and fingerprints start to appear.
- Lung development: If the baby is born early, the lungs are producing surfactant, which keeps air sacs open and facilitates breathing. Weeks 22–24 are when surfaced starts.
- Movement: Your infant can kick, punch, react to light and sound, and has REM sleep cycles now.
- Internal systems: The foundation for motor skills and sensory response is laid by the ongoing development of the major brain and muscles.
- The features of your child are starting to become completely identifiable; the simply require additional fat to fully fill out their face.
